Tnemec’s HydroFlon is quickly becoming the coating of choice for water tanks throughout the country. The performance of HydroFlon has certainly satisfied engineering firm Burley-Guminiak & Associates, who did not hesitate in specifying the coating when plans were made for the repaint of the water storage tank on the SUNY-Canton campus in Canton, New York.

The interior lining system specified for the 500,000 gallon welded steel tank included Series 91-H2O Hydro-Zinc, a two-component, moisture-cured, aromatic zinc-rich urethane primer spray-applied over steel prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP10 Near-White Blast Cleaning. Two coats of Series N140 Pota-Pox Plus, a potable water polyamidoamine epoxy coating offering high-build edge protection and application at a wide range of temperatures, were spray-applied as the interior system’s topcoat.

Following abrasive blasting in accordance with SSPC-SP6 Commercial Blast Cleaning, the exterior of the tank was primed with Series 90-97 Tneme-Zinc, a moisture-cured, aromatic zinc-rich urethane primer. An intermediate coat of Series 1075 Endura-Shield II, an aliphatic polyurethane coating highly resistant to abrasion and exterior weathering, was then brush- and roller-applied.

A brush- and roller-applied topcoat of Series 701 HydroFlon completed the exterior of the water tank. Series 701 is a semi-gloss fluorourethane exterior finish specially designed for tanks and other exposed steel substrates, and provides excellent resistance to ultraviolet light degradation and unprecedented long-term gloss and color retention.

“We are expecting the coating systems used on the Canton water tank to hold up for a very long time without any need for maintenance,” said Tnemec coating consultant Carl Bye. “The systems perform so well that everyone’s job is made easier.”
