The City of Delaware is located approximately 20 miles north of downtown Columbus, Ohio, in Delaware County. The county is quickly growing, and rates among the Top 20 in the nation for growth, wealth and education levels. When the city determined the location and design for a new 2-million-gallon hydropillar in 2006, they knew that the coating systems really needed to go above and beyond, ensuring a maintenance-free structure for the long term. Tnemec was there to deliver.

For the wet and dry areas of the elevated steel tank’s interior, Series 91-H2O Hydro-Zinc a moisture-cured, zinc-rich urethane, was spray-applied as the primer. Two coats of Series 20 Pota-Pox, a polyamide epoxy that has been the industry standard for potable water epoxy coatings for thirty years, were then applied.

The tank’s exterior steel also received a coat of Hydro-Zinc as the primer, followed by an intermediate coat of Series 1075 Endura-Shield II, a semi-gloss aliphatic acrylic polyurethane, and a topcoat of Series 700 HydroFlon, a fluoropolymer polyurethane finish.

HydroFlon has quickly become the coating of choice for many water storage tanks throughout the country. Tnemec coating consultant Dan Haines recommended HydroFlon for the Southeast Highland Elevated Tank due to its durability, outstanding color and gloss retention, superior UV protection and easy application characteristics. The coating was also selected and worked perfectly for the exterior graphics of the hydropillar, which depicts a landscape with a city rising above it. Surely a true sign of things to come for Delaware, Ohio.
