How Corrosion Panels Are Rated

Accelerated corrosion tests help to demonstrate a coating’s ability to protect steel substrates against various forms of corrosion.

Accelerated corrosion tests help to demonstrate a coating’s ability to protect steel substrates against various forms of corrosion. Common coating industry tests include ASTM B117 Salt Spray and ASTM D 5894 Cyclic Salt Fog/QUV. After being exposed to these accelerated test methods, the coating is then evaluated across several criteria including the degree of rusting, blistering, and the amount of rust creepage along the scribed portion of the panel.

The format of results published by coating manufacturers may differ slightly but should include references to the three rating criteria. Here’s an example of how a coating manufacturer’s published corrosion performance information may appear: No blistering, cracking, rusting, or delamination of film. No more than 1/32-inch rust creepage at scribe after 10,000 hours of exposure.
