When architects for the new Toledo Correctional Institution required protective coating systems for the facility’s interior bath and shower rooms, Tnemec captured their attention. Opened in 2000, the correctional facility is a 418,000-square-foot facility encompassing approximately 45 acres in Toledo, Ohio. The full-service institution includes a 1,000-bed close security prison with an additional 250-bed minimum security site encampment.

Tnemec’s Power-Tread mortar system was applied to the floor areas of the bath and shower rooms. Series 201 Epoxoprime, a high-solids moisture tolerant epoxy, was roller-applied as the primer, followed by Series 237 Power-Tread, an impact-resistant, aggregate-filled polyamine epoxy, applied at ¼-inch thickness. Series 280 Tneme-Glaze, a corrosion-resistant, modified polyamine epoxy, was then applied to seal the heavy-duty floor system and provide chemical, stain and abrasion resistance.

Series 216 Quickfill, a fast-curing, aggregate reinforced material for surfacing concrete, was applied to the interior shower walls, followed by a prime coat of Series 201 Epoxoprime. Series 270 Stranlok, a 100% solids fiberglass-reinforced epoxy, was then spray-applied to the walls. Stranlok is a high-performance wall coating designed to provide protection against acids, alkalis and physical abuse while limiting downtime during application. Completing the system was a topcoat of Series 280 Tneme-Glaze. The ceilings were also coated with the Stranlok system.

The cell walls throughout the institution were also specified with Tnemec. Following abrasive blast cleaning of the concrete, the cell walls were patched and surfaced with Series 216 Quickfill.

“The application went without a hitch,” said Tnemec coating consultant Dan Haines. “Poggemeyer Design Group knew Tnemec had worked well in other facilities they had designed, so you could say the product sold itself.”
