As the new home of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, Golden 1 Center is in a league of its own when it comes to green building design that included the use of low volatile organic compound (VOC) coating systems from Tnemec.
“The project architect designed the arena to achieve the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification,” explained Darrell Buerky of Midwest Coating Consultants, Inc. “They wanted low-VOC coatings that would also provide the performance they required.”
Buerky collaborated on the $556-million project with coating consultant Sherry Amos of Amos and Associates in California, who was supported by other Tnemec representatives in Minnesota and Arizona.
“I worked on the coating specification with the architect and Sherry was on-site to assist the coating contractor,” Buerky observed. “One of the things that makes Tnemec so effective is the way we coordinate projects among various offices across the nation.”
Structural steel was prepared by shop applicators in accordance with SSPC-SP6/NACE 3 Commercial Blast Cleaning and primed with Series 27WB Typoxy, a low-odor, low-VOC water-based epoxy coating featuring HydroLink curing technology for exceptional durability and corrosion.
“I was primarily involved with assisting the coating contractor with primer touch-ups on structural steel and the six-story high entrance doors that open up to cool the arena,” Amos shared.
“The arena installed five aircraft hangar doors at the entrance, all coated with Tnemec coating systems,” added Amos. “I helped with any issues to ensure everything went smoothly.”
The arena’s overhead deck required more than 3,600 gallons of Series 115 Uni-Bond DF, a high-performance, waterborne acrylic primer and finish.
Other low-VOC coatings specified for the project included Series 1095 Endura-Shield, an aliphatic acrylic polyurethane coating with excellent color and gloss retention; Series 1029 Enduratone, a water-based, High Dispersion Pure acrylic polymer; and Series 297 Enviro-Glaze, a waterborne polyurethane coating for interior wall and floor applications.
Gray, white and “arena silver” were the primary colors used for the project, in addition to the Pantone PMS athletic gold coating that spells out Golden 1 on the arena’s thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) roofing membrane.
Golden 1 Center was the first indoor arena to achieve LEED Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council and the first sports arena to be 100 percent solar powered.
