Mill Street Brewery Tank Room Floors

Best known for its Original Organic Lager and Tankhouse Ale, Mill Street Brewery has been brewing various year-round and seasonal beers in the Toronto area since 2002. When Mill St. needed to expand their brewing and bottling space in 2006, they moved into a larger building in Scarborough, Ontario, and started looking for quality construction solutions for the new facility.

“The project team needed a highly durable and cleanable floor system in their tank room and bottling areas,” recalled Dave Walker, local Tnemec representative with Avid Protective Products, LTD. “We were able to offer them a time-tested solution that had been used in other breweries and food processing facilities throughout Canada and the U.S.”

Floors in breweries, wineries and other similar facilities are regularly subjected to regular drainage, condensation and wash-downs, and most owners want to make sure that their flooring products are aesthetically pleasing as well. For these kind of exposures, Tnemec Company, Inc. offers high-performance systems designed to protect the substrate from corrosion, abrasion and chemical attack.

Concrete floors in the new Mill St. facility were prepared in accordance with SSPCSP13/NACE No. 6 Surface Preparation of Concrete. Applicators then used Series 243 Ultra-Tread V, a low-odor and thermal-shock-resistant polyurethane-modified concrete, to build trenches and coves in designated areas. Series 243 was trowelapplied up to 3/16” (5 mm) thickness.

Floors in the facility were then coated using a slurry-applied floor coating, Series 245 Ultra-Tread S. This polyurethane concrete product provides superior performance compared to other flooring systems such as acid brick, quarry tile and most alternative polymer systems. Series 245 was applied to the floor at approximately 3/16” (5 mm) thickness using trowel or screed rake and finished with a roller.

“It’s important to note, too, that both of the products used were approved by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for use in Canadian food and beverage facilities,” added Walker. “In fact, Tnemec offers a long list of products approved by the CFIA that have been applied in food and beverage facilities throughout the area.”

With its new facility, Mill St. continues to expand its offerings for new and longtime craft beer enthusiasts. In 2012, the brewery expanded into Ottawa and now operates several brew pubs throughout Ontario
