Kalahari Water Park Resort, Sandusky

Wisconsin Dells is home to the original Kalahari Resort, claiming to have “America’s largest indoor water park.” In 2005, Kalahari Resort, Sandusky was developed, located in Sandusky, Ohio. Tnemec coating systems were specified for all structural steel in the pool area and all floors and walls throughout shower room areas of the indoor water park. Various other locations including the kitchen and preparation areas and souvenir shops were also specified to receive Tnemec coatings.

Approximately 40,000 square feet of structural steel was coated with Series 90- 97 Tneme-Zinc, a moisture-cured, zinc-rich, aromatic urethane primer, followed by a topcoat of Series 73 Endura-Shield, an aliphatic acrylic polyurethane. Endura-Shield is highly resistant to abrasion, wet conditions, corrosive fumes, chemical contact and exterior weathering.

Tnemec’s Deco-Tread system was specified for the shower room floors. Series 203 Epoxoprime LV, a polyamine epoxy, was backrolled as the primer, followed by Series 222 Deco-Tread, a quartz-filled polyamine epoxy, applied at 1/8-inch thickness. Series 285 Satinglaze, a clear polyamine epoxy with an orange peel texture for diffusing light and reducing glare, and Series 297 Enviro-Glaze, a fast drying waterborne polyurethane that provides enhanced abrasion and stain resistance, completed the flooring system.

“The contractor had used the Deco-Tread system before and loves it,” said Tnemec coating consultant Dan Haines. “The installation turned out great.”

Series 201 Epoxoprime, a high-solids polyamine epoxy, was roller-applied to 2,000-square feet of shower room walls, followed by Series 273 Stranlok ML, a fiberglass mat-reinforced epoxy coating system that provides a smooth, seamless surface with excellent chemical, stain, impact and abrasion resistance. Series 280 Tneme-Glaze, a modified polyamine epoxy, was then roller-applied, after which decorative flake was embedded in the Tneme-Glaze for added effect and sealed with two coats of Series 296 Enviro-Glaze UR Clear, an abrasion resistant waterborne urethane.

The water park has been such a success that the owners have announced plans for a 93,000-square-foot expansion in 2007. That additional square footage has many folks excited. Not only for the additional park fun and adventure, but when the construction is complete, Ohio will be taking over the claim of “America’s largest indoor water park.”
