Domtar Paper is the largest producer of uncoated freesheet papers in North America, totaling 4.9 million tons of paper capacity annually throughout its 15 paper mills. With more than 102,000 tons of annual paper production capacity at Domtar’s Port Huron, Michigan location, owners knew that a quick turnaround would be crucial when the time came to select the right coating system to protect their existing clarifier.
Tnemec coating consultant Ken Hartwig recommended a coating system to Domtar that would ensure the clarifier would be back online quickly. “The applicator was able to blast the steel during the day and prime it at night,” said Hartwig. “The coating system that was selected provided for the customer’s requirements without the concern of sacrificing quality or cost.”
Following surface preparation in accordance with SSPC-SP10/NACE No. 2 NearWhite Metal Blast Cleaning, three coats of Series 446 Perma-Shield MCU, a single-component, moisture-cured urethane, was spray-applied to the clarifier basin. Series 446 is a coating quickly becoming well-known for its user-friendly and rapid curing properties, as well its excellent chemical resistance.
The interior railing and catwalks received a prime coat of Series 66 Hi-Build Epoxoline, a polyamide epoxy, followed by a topcoat of Series 1074 Endura-Shield II, an aliphatic acrylic polyurethane highly resistant to abrasion, wet conditions and corrosive fumes.
“The owners were pleased that we were able to offer Series 446 in a variety of colors as compared to the usual coal tar epoxy,” noted Hartwig. “The back-to-service was right on schedule, and it was an overall nice project.”
