Revitalizing the Grand Canyon West Skywalk
An Unprecedented Coating Success!
In June 2023, a daring and awe-inspiring project unfolded at the Grand Canyon West Skywalk, where Tnemec, in collaboration with Abseilon and Fine Point Finishes, undertook the task of painting the steel structure that stands 4,000 feet above the canyon floor. This blog unveils the engineering marvels and meticulous processes involved in preserving the beauty and integrity of this iconic attraction.
Skywalk Coating Triumph
The Ingenious Platform by Abseilon:
A pivotal element in this ambitious project was the creation of a specialized platform, suitably named a "stage," designed by Abseilon. This innovative stage, equipped with wheels that rolled seamlessly on gusset rails attached to the Skywalk, served as a mobile workspace. It allowed the painters from Fine Point Finishes to navigate the entire structure efficiently and safely, ensuring no spot was left untouched.
The Coating Process:
The success of this re-coating venture hinged on a precise and comprehensive coating process. First, the Skywalk underwent a chemical wash, removing any sheen and loose dirt from the steel. This crucial step set the foundation for the subsequent layers of protection.
The next phase involved the painters using mechanical abrasion, employing sandpaper to strip away the existing coating. This step prepared the steel surface for the application of Tnemec's Series 135 Chembuild, a high-performance primer specially formulated to bond seamlessly with the existing coating.
Series 135 Chembuild: The Backbone of Protection
Series 135 Chembuild is a robust, high-performance primer by Tnemec, specifically engineered to provide superior adhesion to existing coatings. It acts as the backbone of protection, ensuring that the subsequent layers adhere seamlessly to the steel surface. With its advanced formula, Series 135 enhances durability and corrosion resistance, crucial for structures facing the challenging environmental conditions the Grand Canyon experiences.
The final touch, Series 1072 Fluoronar, a top-tier coating by Tnemec, was applied. This fluoropolymer not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also provides a robust shield against the harsh elements the Skywalk faces, ensuring longevity and durability.
Series 1072 Fluoronar: Unparalleled Protection and Aesthetics
Series 1072 Fluoronar is a high-quality topcoat known for its exceptional protective qualities and aesthetic enhancement. Applied over the primer, this fluoropolymer creates a durable barrier against UV rays, abrasion, and chemical exposure. Its weather-resistant properties make it an ideal choice for structures exposed to the elements, ensuring that the Grand Canyon Skywalk remains not only structurally sound but visually stunning.
A High-Flying Achievement:
What makes this project truly extraordinary is that the entire recoating process occurred while the Grand Canyon West Skywalk remained open to the public. The skilled team from Fine Point Finishes worked diligently 4,000 feet above the canyon floor, showcasing not only their technical prowess but also their commitment to minimizing disruption to the attraction.
Visitor Experience at the Grand Canyon Skywalk: Where Majesty Meets Innovation
As a visitor to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, the experience is nothing short of breathtaking. Stepping onto the glass walkway, suspended thousands of feet above the canyon floor, provides a unique perspective of the awe-inspiring landscape. The recent recoating efforts by Tnemec, Abseilon, and Fine Point Finishes ensure that this experience is not only visually stunning but also safe and structurally sound.
