The exterior of the Metro Farms standpipe in Kirtland, OH was coated with Series 740 UVX because of its resistance to abrasion and exterior weathering.
Visitors to Lake Farm agricultural theme park near Kirtland, Ohio, are likely to do a double take when they see the 700,000 gallon standpipe painted to resemble a blue and white Harvestore steel grain silo. “The water tank was originally specified with a standard polyurethane topcoat, but the owner wanted better color and gloss retention,” recalled Tnemec coating consultant Sean Carlin. “Series 740 UVX is an innovative polyurethane coating that offers higher gloss and a hard, durable film that stands up to abrasion and exterior weathering.”
The tank’s exterior surface was prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP6/NACE No. 3 Commercial Blast Cleaning and primed with Series 90-97 Tneme-Zinc, a two-component, zinc-rich aromatic urethane which was spray-applied. Next, an intermediate coat of Series 161 Tneme-Fascure, a low temperature-cure polyamide epoxy, was brush- and roller-applied. A finish coat of Series 740 UVX, an advanced technology polyurethane, completed the exterior system. “Once the zinc primer and epoxy intermediate coats were on the tank, applying the finish took only a day or two,” according to Carlin. “Series 740 tends to glide on when being roller applied.”
Series 740 combines less than 100 grams/liter volatile organic compound (VOC) content with superior color and gloss retention. “With only 92 grams per liter VOC, this coating is a significant leap forward in terms of low VOC technology,” Carlin noted.
Interior steel was prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP10/NACE No. 2 Near-White Metal Blast Cleaning prior to the spray application of Series FC20 Pota-Pox, a fast-curing polyamide epoxy. The interior also received two spray-applied coats of Series N140 Pota-Pox Plus, a polyamidoamine epoxy potable water coating.
The owner and applicator were happy with the final project and exterior finish, Carlin shared. “Series 740 tends not to lap as much when you move from one drop to the next,” he added. “You don’t have a noticeable lap mark issue when you look at it.”
Located 25 miles east of downtown Cleveland, Lake Farm Park is part of the Lake Metroparks system, which provides more than 2 million visitors with diverse facilities that include five parks near Lake Erie’s shoreline.
