Eden Prairie City Hall Maintenance Facility

The city of Eden Prairie, Minn., sits on the southwestern edge of the Twin Cities. Founded in 1880, the city’s greatest population boom took place from 1960 to 2000, when the tiny town blossomed from just more than 2,000 residents to a thriving suburb of almost 60,000.

In 2006, the city decided its maintenance facility, home to the Public Works Department which houses Engineering, Street Maintenance, Fleet Services and Environmental Services, was in need of new flooring in its building. The building has general offices and staff locker rooms as well as a lunchroom.

“They’d had issues with tile and carpet in the past,” said Tnemec coating consultant Kevin Renslow. “So we recommended a coating system that would protect the concrete.”

Renslow worked with the city to choose a system that would be functional and aesthetically pleasing. In the end, the city chose Series 224 Deco-Fleck, a flake-filled polyamine epoxy floor topping. The concrete floor was first shot blasted, then received the Deco-Fleck system. After decorative flake was broadcasted to refusal, a grout coat of Series 284 Deco-Clear, a clear polyamine epoxy, was applied, followed by a topcoat of Series 295 Clear CRU to seal the floor. Series 295 is an extremely hard, chemical-resistant clear urethane finish coat with superb flow characteristics and excellent resistance to abrasion, wet conditions, corrosive fumes and chemicals. It is typically used over epoxy and urethane flooring systems for increased abrasion resistance.

Renslow says, “the city is pleased with the floor’s increased cleanability, and especially with its appearance.”
